A Polish soldier died on Thursday (6/6/2024), after he was stabbed on the
border with Belarus by illegal migrants trying to cross into the European
Union, the army said.

Mateus (only his first name was released), a soldier with the 1st Armored
Brigade, was stabbed by illegal immigrants trying to cross the border fence in
late May.

"Despite the assistance given to him at the scene of the criminal attack on the
border with Belarus and the efforts of the doctors, it was not possible to save
his life," the army said. Recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of
illegal migrants attempting to cross the border, and border guards have
reported a number of violent incidents.

"We ask the Belarus authorities to find the killer and hand him over to Polish
authorities," Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski said. Later today, a letter of
protest will be served on the Belarus chargé d'affaires, he added.
